Pick up the packet from the office.
1. Read the textbook portion to learn how to read, analyze, and annotate. Answer any and all questions at the end of reading material. Memorize the rhetorical devices at the end of the packet. (Language and Composition: The Art of Voice) There will be a quiz over these devices during the first week of school. You may also want to watch the video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jrly3EtnT8I Reading Strategies with Elaine McPhee to better understand how to annotate.
2. Read and annotate for the two stories: "Working at Wendy's" by Joey Franklin and "On Dumpster Diving" by Lars Eighner. Be sure to answer the questions at the end of each story. We will share our annotations in class during the first week of class. This will be counted as a homework grade.
3. I would like to see a sample of your writing. I will include a rubric that will be used to grade your essay that first week as well. I just want to see what your strengths and weaknesses are, so that I know where to start. Read both AP English Language and Composition Free-Response Questions. Pick one. Write an essay. Although it is not timed, it will show me what you can do.
